Living Room Trends For 2023

12 June 2023

Your living room is where it all happens. Whether you’re relaxing after a long day, having friends and family over or helping your children with their schoolwork; it all starts in your lounge. With so much time spent in this room, it’s important you keep it feeling fresh and comforting, which you can do easily adopting some of the latest interior design trends.

In the words of Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux, the living room has: “in recent years become more of a showcase to impress friends and family than a place in which we could be our true selves.” If you’re in need of some inspiration to give your living room some va-va-voom. Here’s the living room trends that are setting the tone in 2023.

Show off your personality

Knick-knacks and ornamental items we may have previously hidden away are now becoming the centre piece of living rooms. Sideboards, shelving, cabinets – they’re all great ways to showcase your items which tell a story of your life. Colour coordinate with other accessories in your living room or go for completely contrasting colours for a truly personal touch.

Bring the outdoors in

The introduction of plants in the home was a hot trend during lockdown but in 2023, this is a trend that’s set to bloom. Having more nature in our lives is not only beneficial for our wellbeing, but our overall mental health, too. Think about the inclusion of plants and flowers in your home (go faux if you can’t handle the maintenance), but also consider how you can bring natural colours into your décor, too. Bring in neutral green palettes, organic textures and metallics for a luxury finish.

Introduce textures…

Textures are something which come and go within interiors and in 2020, the boucle texture was all the rage. This knobbly textured material was seen throughout upholstery and soft furnishings, and it’s expected to remain just as popular in 2023. Invest in a statement piece of furniture like a tub chair or sofa in beautiful, neutral shades that are offset with darker shades of colour.

…And velvet

Velvet is also remaining as a staple material within our living rooms throughout 2023. This material is no longer seen as outdated, but now more modern, as a great way to add some luxury to your space. From curtains to cocktail chairs and sofas; velvet is a great way to not only adding some texture, but also a pop of colour to your living space.

Introduce bright blue hues

After being named the Dulux Colour of the Year for 2022, blue is reigning supreme in 2023 – and in all tones. Adding blue to a space is a great way to add some harmony and brightness as your eyes don’t need to adjust to the colour. With such a wide spectrum of hues too, you can find a shade that fits your space perfectly. Whether you want something cool, vibrant, calming, or energetic; everyone can find a shade of blue that perfectly suits them. Electric blue is a common favourite, whether used on whole walls, or as a pop of colour on doorways or within accessories.

Invest in multi-functional pieces

When it comes to investing in new pieces of furniture, the optimum focus is multi-functional. Many of us are using our homes for more than just living. Our home is now our own little gym, our office, our place of business; so, we need spaces, and furniture, that makes the most of our space. But it’s also about making pieces last. Look for versatile pieces and flexible storage that works as both a need and a solution. Having great storage helps to declutter our spaces, and with that, our minds, creating a calmer and more tranquil living space.
